I grew up in the Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia, where the state park was quite literally my backyard. My childhood was spent exploring forests, wading through cold mountain streams, and learning the rhythms of the natural world.

People are surprised to learn that I had no intention of sharing my story in Jerusalem Calls! My plan was to write about the history of the three pilgrimage feasts, placing readers in the shoes of the ancient Israelites from the exodus wilderness through Jesus’ last year of earthly ministry. After reviewing my proposal, the acquisitions editor said they loved the book concept, but wanted me to write it from the framework of my own faith story.

It all really began in college when I was struggling to feel confident again, manage my weight, and figure out what was “wrong with me.” I had tried so many different plans and programs without anything sticking, and I couldn’t figure out what to believe — everyone seemed to have contradicting opinions.
