You’re So Fly: Danielle Johnson

Tell us a little about yourself! What brought you to Winston-Salem, and what has your journey looked like since arriving here?

It was a bit of a winding road to end up in Winston-Salem. A lot of my family moved to different areas of North Carolina from Southern California in the 2000’s. I was working in New York at the time and decided to move closer to family and pursue a calmer pace of life. I got a job at John Deere Kids in Winston, met my husband here, and decided this is where we would stay planted! Well… eventually. We moved out to San Francisco for three years, then came back to Winston.

How did you hear about Flywheel, and what motivated you to join the community?

I saw an old Instagram post about a part-time community coordinator position and decided to email and put my hat in the ring in case the role became available again. Turns out Becca was looking for someone!

What has been your favorite part about working at Flywheel so far, and what are you most excited to see grow within our community?

Honestly, everyone working in the space and for the space has been so nice. I’m definitely curious what types of new collaborations the podcast studio will bring.

Outside of Flywheel, you have an Etsy side hustle! Tell us about it! What do you make, what inspired you to start it, and what have you learned from building something of your own?

I’ve worked in kids’ clothing and t-shirt graphics, so I decided to merge these skills into an Etsy shop. I started at nap times with my second daughter and created a shop of kids’ name art, digital invitations, and family-themed prints. I’ve enjoyed working on these products as a creative outlet and have enjoyed learning more about an e-commerce channel. It’s been more of an uphill battle than expected since it’s a very saturated space. I still think it will gain more traction as I keep adding to it and seeing what works, but it has been a slow burn. I would love any feedback or thoughts!
